Somnia values the internet as a powerful medium for education, business, dispersion of information and entertainment purposes. We are committed to taking every possible step to make the internet a safe, unobtrusive, and inoffensive communication medium. As a voluntary measure, this web site has been labeled by the Internet Content Rating Association (ICRA). Somnia supports this grassroots movement which aims at empowering web masters to self regulate the internet.
The ICRA is an international, non-profit, independent organization that empowers the public to make informed decisions about electronic media by means of the open and objective labeling of content. ICRA's dual aims are to:
- protect children from potentially harmful material; and,
- to protect free speech on the internet.
How it works?
Web authors who opt to use the ICRA labeling system first fill out a survey about the content of their web site. Within each broad category the web author is asked questions about whether a specific item or feature is present or absent on the site. Based on their answers to the questions, content labels are embedded into the web page. The Content Labels generated by ICRA conform to an internet industry standard known as PICS (the Platform for Internet Content Selection).
The broad topics covered through this process are:
- Presence of chat rooms
- The language used on the site
- The nudity and sexual content of a site
- The violence depicted on the site
- Others such as gambling, drugs and alcohol.
